In Greenwich Park, there is a historical axis from the royal observatory to the river themes through the royal naval school. Although there is a block of skyscraper behind the river, when Christopher Wren made this axis, it was a dockland where a number of ships were moored. It is not well known that Wren was an astronomer before he became an architect. Even after three hundreds years, we can still feel Wren's pride on navigation and astronomy which brought the golden age to British empire.

グリニッジ公園には、有名な天文台から旧王立海軍学校を通してテムズ川を望む明確な軸が通っている。川の向こうのドックランドには現在は高層ビルが立ち並んでいるが、クリストファー・レンが設計した当時は無数の帆船の停泊する港だったはずだ。
近代イギリス最高の建築家とされるレンだが、建築家になる以前は天文学者でもあった。大英帝国全盛期を支えた航海術と天文学への誇りを、数百年経った現在でも感じ取ることができる公園だ。
