Beijing, November (3)

This is a typical community park in Beijing. There are two ping-pong tables and old men and parents play ping-pong. Ping-pong can be called as an open sport for anyone, as physical strength is not really important in this game. In this sense, we can say this park with two ping-pong tables are also opened to everyone. On the other hand, because ping-pong is played by a small group of people, what I can do is just to watch this scene from outside. Unlike football, basketball, seesaw or swing, ping-pong forms a closed system in the park.

これは北京の一般的な社区公園(社区＝地区のような単位)である。中国らしく卓球台が二台置かれ、おじさんたちや親子がゲームをしている。体力がさほど重要な要素でないため、子供からお年寄りまで開かれたスポーツと言える。そういう意味では、卓球台が備わったこの公園も多くの人に開かれている。一方で、卓球は少人数で向き合って行われるため、僕はそれを外から眺めるだけである。卓球台が、サッカーやバスケット、或いはシーソーやブランコとも違う閉鎖系の場を形成する。
