Trafalgar Square contains several statutes of historical figures like kings and Lord Nelson. But only on the fourth plinth, a contemporary art (currently a huge bottle ship) is displayed. Originally this plinth is designed in 1841 to display an equestrian statue. However they realized only its plinth because of the insufficient funds. Four years ago, the Mayer of London started to use this plinth, which had been empty for 150 years, as a display space for innovative artworks. 6 shortlists for next year's display are exhibited in the church next to the square and everyone can vote for his/her favorite.
トラファルガー広場はネルソン提督の像を中心に歴代の王の銅像が建っているのだが、Fourth Plinthと呼ばれる台座の上にだけは場違いな現代アート（現在は巨大なボトルシップ）が展示されている。元々は騎馬像を建てる予定だったのが、1841年に台座が完成した時点で予算不足に陥り、その後150年以上もの間放置されていたものを4年前から市が現代アートの展示場所として活用しているのだ。来年の展示候補６作は隣接する教会の地下で展示されており、誰でも投票出来るようになっている。
